I. German Southwest Africa--the early years.

A. Foundation of colony in 1884.
B. Complex population.

1. Herero.

C. Effort to rule indirectly through tribal chieftains.

II. The Herero Uprising 1904.

3. Genocide of the Herero.

C. In the wake of the suppression of the revolt, the establishment of a racial state in Southwest Africa.

1. All Herero land and cattle seized.
2. Strict residential segregation.
3. Ban on marriages between Germans and Africans.
4. Africans forced to wear passports around their necks.
5. The effort to create a class of dependent wage laborers out of a population that had been pastoral and nomadic.

III. The long term consequences: Imperialism abroad leads to the expansion of race-thinking, including racial anti-Semitism, in Europe.
