Industrial Revolution II

I. Popular protests against industrialization.

A. Luddites.
B. Ideological and political roots of the Luddites were quite diverse, but they can be neatly labeled as "radical republicanism" or Jacobinism. A democratic vision.
C. Important influence of the American and French revolutions.

1. Tom Paine.

D. Also Romantic poets, like Shelley.
E. Religious roots, especially Methodism.

II. The socialist critique.

A. Fourier, Cabet, Tristan, Proudhon, Owen.
B. Marx's Philosophical and Economic Manuscripts 1844.
