This page contains links to the differing occupational classification schemes recorded in the IPUMS. Each census used its own unique scheme, which was recorded in the sample for that year (1850-1870 use the 1880 scheme). These occupation codes correspond to the OCC variable in the IPUMS. In addition, the IPUMS codes all census years into the 1950 classification scheme, recording them in the variable OCC1950. See OCC1950 codes and frequencies for the 1950 sample occupation codes. The first entry in the following list details the two IPUMS occupational scoring systems, which are based on the common OCC1950 classification system.
