The Minnesota Historical Census Project is creating the IPUMS (Integrated Public Use Microdata Series), a database of samples of the US population drawn from thirteen federal censuses, spanning the period 1850 to1990. The database allows the historical study of such topics as urbanization, industrialization, fertility, immigration, internal migration, labor-force participation, and family structure. Qualifications: Must be an undergraduate in a degree-granting program. General background and interest in 19th/20th century social history sufficient. Persons with strong interest in quantitative historical research preferred. Training provided. All years welcome.
 
Duties:
  • 20% looking up ambiguous cases on microfilm copies of the 1910, 1900, and 1860/70 censuses.
  • 20% classifying characteristics such as occupation, industry, location, etc…
  • 60% cleaning old census data.
