Codes and Frequencies

Description/Comparability:
SELFWTHH indicates whether or not the household is included in a 1940 or 1950 self-weighting sample. Selecting self-weighting households yields a flat sample in which every case is weighted equally. Without using SELFWTHH, the variable HHWT is required to create nationally representative statistics in these years. SELFWTHH removes the need to weight these samples, but at a price: roughly two-thirds of the cases in 1950 are thrown out, and about 5000 cases in 1940 (see Codes and Frequencies). See Chapter 2, "Sample Designs," for more information about the 1940 and 1950 samples.

SELFWTHH should not be used if the analysis requires sample-line variables; see the person variable SELFWTSL

This variable is fully comparable.
