Description/Comparability:
In 1960 all respondents answered the same population questions, but
some of the housing questions were asked of a smaller sample of the population.
SAMP1960 identifies which set of questions the household answered. All
households in the 1960 census were included in either the PH4 sample, those
people in cities with 50,000 or more residents, or the PH3 sample, those
people living outside large cities. The PH4 included questions about elevators
and stories, while the PH3 collected information about sewage disposal
and water source. In 1960, 25% of the households also received a second
questionnaire containing additional "sample" questions; the PUMS is selected
entirely from those households responding to these supplementary questions.
From these households, four out of five were sent one questionnaire (the
20% form) and one out of five were sent another questionnaire (the 5% form).
The 1960 PUMS maintains the same proportion of households; 80% responded
to the 20% form, and 20% responded to the 5% form.
The following household variables are available only for the indicated
samples:
See Chapter 1, "Introduction," and Chapter
2, "Sample Designs," for more information about the 1960 sampling procedure.
