PROVKE identifies the household's province within Kenya. It is the largest-scale geographical identifier available in the Kenya samples, which also report district in the variable DISTKE.

The 1989 sample separately identified North and South Rift Valley Provinces, but they were combined in 1999. Those 1989 provinces are given the same code in PROVKE, but they can be distinguished using the variable DISTKE (codes 7070 to 7130 are the Northern Rift Valley; 7010 to 7062 are the Southern Rift Valley).
