Description
"Industry" refers to the activity or product of the establishment or sector in which the person worked. IND is classified according to the system used by the respective national census office at the time and is not recoded by IPUMS-International.

Comparability - General
Industry codes vary across samples. For a consistent classification of industries at a general level, see the INDGEN variable.

NOTE: The original samples sometimes have fewer digits in their codes than the number allotted in IND. In such cases, the codes are justified to the right, and the leading zeroes on the left should be ignored. See "codes" above.
