1. How important is the PUMS for your research in your field?

indispensable       very useful       useful       somewhat useful       not useful

2. How many times have you used the PUMS data in your research?

never       once       2-5 times       6-10 times       over 10 times

3. How important is it to maximize data compatibility across census years?

indispensable       very useful       useful       somewhat useful       not useful

6. What is the minimum number of occupational categories necessary for research in your field?

      505 titles (same as 1980 and 1990)
      160 titles (same as 1950)
      25 broad categories
      Occupations are not neeeded

7. If only a broad occupational classification can be provided, which aspect of
    occupation should be stressed?

Socioeconomic status (e.g, simplified Duncan SEI score)
Type of work (e.g. clerical sales, manufacturing, etc.)
      Simplified industrial classification
      Maximize historical comparability
      Maximize international comparability
Other (specify in comment section below)
      No opinion

8. What level of geographic detail is required for research in your field?

PUMAs of 100,000 population (same as 1980 and 1990)
PUMAs of 250,000 population (same as 1970)
      Metropolitan areas
      States
      Regions
      Geographic codes are not neeeded

9. The Bureau might make the decisions on the reduction of detail before the data are processed
or they might wait until afterwards to allow analysis of the data to determine the need for
confidentiality. The later strategy might allow greater detail, but could result in a significant
delay in release of data. I recognize that one would need to know more to make an informed decision,
but in general, would you prefer a less detailed dataset released more promptly, or would you be
prepared to wait if it might mean a more useful dataset?
I would be prepared to wait       I would prefer less detail sooner       No opinion

10. Please comment below on ways in which reduction of PUMS detail might affect your research.
Be specific as possible. For example, if you specialize in aging research, comment on the
sorts of analyses that would be precluded by grouped age data.

11. Do you think it is plausible that PUMS data would be used to identify the characteristics of specific individuals?

      Yes       No

12. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on issues of privacy or confidentiality in the PUMS,
      please elaborate:

14. Would you like us to keep you informed about developments on the 2000 PUMS files as they unfold?
