The following documents were generated in response to proposals by the U.S. Census Bureau to limit the types of information available to the public. Due in part to the work of the Task Force on the 2000 PUMS, the Census Bureau announced on October 19, 2000 that it would pursue most of the recommendation made by the Task Force. The information below was provided during the course of the Task Force's campaign. For more information on the Census Bureau's decision, click here.

Why Is There a Task Force?

The Census Bureau is considering significant reductions in the level of subject detail for the Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) of the 2000 Census. A task force was organized by concerned members of the demographic community to propose a balance between data integrity and issues of confidentiality.
