preparing for your major paper

Can I use the internet to do my research?

You can, but you need to be very careful. It can be very hard to ascertain where materials come from when you are looking at it on the web. There is no control over what is published on the web, therefore it is difficult to be sure who wrote it and where they got it from. Stick to established websites, like online versions of newspapers and primary source depositories. Do not randomly search and use anything that come up. Most importantly, do not only use internet materials. You must use books and articles in order to cross-check and flesh out anything that the internet can give you.

Finally, ask your instructor for permission to use the internet as a source, and keep the instructor informed about where you are looking for information. If you have doubts, either don't use the site or ask the instructor to take a look.

Keep a record of the sites just as you would with a bibliography of books, and write the days you access the sites. You need the dates of access to properly construct a bibliography.
