When should I take this course?
Since the research and writing of the major paper can be very time intensive, most students take History 4961W during their last year of coursework, preferably when they are not taking too many other credits.
Students should have completed most of their requirements for the History major, especially the courses in your area of concentration, three upper-division courses connected either on the basis of:
a) geographical-cultural areas, e.g., Africa, Ancient Civilization, East Asia, Europe through the Renaissance, Modern Europe, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, or the United States; or on the basis of
b) a unifying theme, method, subject or time period, e.g., economic history, women's history, diplomacy in Europe and the U.S., the eighteenth century.
The Undergraduate Studies Office highly encourages students to write their major papers within their areas of concentration.
Students need to make sure they have also completed at least one pre-requisite course for their section's theme.
