What will I learn in this course?
This semester-long course introduces students to the primary methods of historical research, analysis, and writing and guides students through the process of defining a topic, finding relevant secondary and primary sources, writing a research proposal, conducting the research, outlining and writing a first draft, and revising that draft to create a final paper. Students will spend class time discussing common readings, research methodologies, and peer reviews of assignments.
Giving and receiving feedback from both the instructor and your peers is a crucial component of the course and full attendance is required. Much of the work required for this course will also be highly individualized and will be conducted by students outside of formal class meetings.
History 4961W is kept intentionally small, and individualized instruction is a priority.
