HIST/LAS 3401W (FALL 2009) QUIZ 4 GUIDELINES

The fourth quiz will be given in class on Tues. Dec. 1, from 9:45 to 10:15. (Budget your time.):

I. I.D. Terms (15 points):

For three out of five terms, you will have to (1) define the terms (including what, where, and when), and (2) explain their historical significance (the “so what?” with at least two substantive ideas). Possible I.D.s:

mita, partido, feitoria, donatary captaincy, aldeias, engenho, caste paintings, gracias al sacar, Palmares, intendancy system, forastero, Corn Riot [a specific one covered in lecture], “free trade” [a specific Spanish policy, not the general economic principle].

II. Short Answer (10 points):

Two of the following questions will appear on the quiz, and you should write one substantial paragraph (about 8-10 sentences) on one of the two:

1. By what means did the Spanish Crown attempt to control the production and export of silver, and how successful were these?

2. Briefly compare and contrast the Spanish and Portuguese colonial agricultural economies of the 16 th and 17 th centuries.

3. Briefly compare and contrast the mita in Peru and African slavery in Brazil as labor systems.

4. What accounts for the relative stability of colonial rule from late 16th century through the early 18th century?
