HIST/LAS 3401W (FALL 2009) QUIZ 3 GUIDELINES

The third quiz will be given in class on Tues. Oct. 27, from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. There will be no test of writing conventions on this quiz; but there may be such a component on quiz 4 depending on what we see in the papers.

Tips: read instructions and questions carefully and make sure that you answer all aspects; be concise and substantive by making each word count.

I. I.D. Terms (5 points each for a total of 15):

You will have to (1) define the terms (including what, where, and when), and (2) explain their historical significance (the “so what?” with at least two substantive ideas).  You will have to define 3 out of 5 terms. The terms are drawn from readings and lectures from Oct. 6 - 16.

Possible Terms:

Lope de Aguirre, Isabel Moctezuma, rapto, Patria Potestad, encomienda, Laws of Burgos, Taqui Onqoy, New Laws, Gonzalo Pizarro, Francisco de Toledo, Tonantzin/Guadalupe, Pablo Joseph de Arriaga, syncretism, Don Melchior Caruarayco, “War by Fire and Blood”

II. Short Answer (10 points):

Two of the following questions will appear on the quiz, and you should write one substantial paragraph (about 8-10 sentences) on one of the two:

Briefly restate the arguments on each side of the debate between Bartolomé de las Casas and Juan Ginés de Sepulveda, and discuss their influence on Spanish colonial policies.

How did Spanish colonialism affect indigenous women and how did they work within the new cultural norms and laws to pursue their interests? Be sure to use at least one specific example.

How did the process of Spanish contact and/or conflict with native peoples differ in “frontiers” from areas that had been centers of indigenous empires?

What methods did Spanish missionaries use to try to convert the indigenous people of the Americas to Christianity and how did these change over time?
