HIST/LAS 3401W (FALL 2009) QUIZ 2 GUIDELINESThe second quiz will be given in class on Tues. Oct. 6 from 9:45-10:15 a.m. It will consist of three parts: I. I.D. Terms (5 points each): You will have to (1) define the terms (including what, where, and when), and (2) explain their historical significance (the “so what?” with at least two substantive ideas ). Four (4) of the following terms will appear on the exam, and you will have to define two (2). The terms are drawn from readings and lectures through October 1. ayllu, kuraka, huaca, Quetzalcoatl, Tlaxcala, Isabella & Ferdinand, The Reconquest, Granada, Tordesillas Line, Carib, Requerimiento, Florentine Codex, altepetl, Noche Triste, Atahualpa, Manco Inca II. Short Answer (10 points): Two of the following questions will appear on the quiz, and you should write one substantial paragraph (about 8-10 sentences) on one of the two: Tips: Read the question carefully and be sure to answer all aspects. As you study, practice writing out your answers so that you will be able to do so quickly when taking the quiz. Make every sentence count so that you can cover the pertinent material.1. Succinctly compare and contrast the organization of the Inca and Mexica empires, and comment upon the potential implications for their later encounter with the Spaniards. 2. Columbus is a more complex historical figure than he is often portrayed. Drawing upon lectures and readings, choose two contrasting terms to describe Columbus and his historical role. Succinctly explain your choice of terms and place them in historical context. 3. Choose a factor (i.e. from the general categories that we brainstormed on the board on Sept. 29) that has often been used to explain Spanish military victories in America, and discuss its importance and complexities. III. Proper Citation Formats Because this is a writing-intensive class, on your papers you will need to use the citation format used in history. We’re giving you a chance to learn it ahead of time, so you will know it by the time of the first paper. Study A Pocket Guide to Writing in History, to find the correct format for books and journal articles in both footnotes/endnotes (1st citation and subsequent) and bibliography/works cited. The quiz will consist of five, multiple-choice questions on these formats. |
