HIST/LAS 3401W: Study Guide for Documents from the Túpac Amaru Rebellion

Andrien’s Andean Worlds, along with the Human Tradition story of Eugenio Sinanyuca, provide a thorough context for the Andean rebellions of the 1780s. The documents selected include a la proclamation issued by T ú pac Amaru recruiting support and identifying the movement’s enemies, and the sentence against T ú pac Amaru after his arrest and trial. (Note for Spanish readers: your selections also include a letter from T ú pac Amaru to another kuraka. “Pucacunca” [roughly “red neck” in Quechua] was a term used by Native Andeans to identify all whites.)

Analyze these documents according to the guide to reading and analyzing historical documents handed out at the beginning of the semester: www.hist.umn.edu/hist3401/primarysources.html

1. The Text: what are the contents of each document?

2. The Context: drawing on the secondary works, put the document in the context of the time and place where it was produced.

3. The Subtext: What specific goals was the author of the document trying to accomplish? What social, political, and/or religious beliefs lay behind these specific goals?

4. Interpretation: How could you use these documents in a paper (or take-home exam) to better understand how and why the rebellion unfolded as it did (e.g. who joined and who did not, why it was successful or not, its lasting impact, etc.)

Please tear off this section and return to your T.A. when you have finished the reading:
