HIST/LAS 3401W: Study Guide for Columbus, Selections from his Diary (Primary Doc) Remember to download and read the background section by Bakewell about Columbus before reading this document. The original of Columbus's journal from his first voyage has long been lost. Historians have reconstructed it from copies--primarily a copy made by Friar Bartolomé de las Casas as well as selections in a biography written by Columbus's son. While this version may not, therefore, be exactly accurate, it still provides us a rare and valuable glimpse into a European's first perceptions of the Americas. Keep in mind that he would have expected his sponsors, Queen Isabella and King Ferndinand, to read his journal so it is not just a private diary. Some scholars argue that Columbus's views were very influenced by the dominant worldview of late medieval Europe and by his conviction that he was going to find Asia. (By the way, “Cipango” is Japan.) Others see him more as a "modern" discoverer/scientist, who was open to finding new things. After reading the entries, consider your own opinion
