Ted

Professor Edward Farmer

I grew up in California but I have been teaching at the University of Minnesota since 1968 so I consider myself a naturalized Minnesotan. Chinese history is my specialty and I have made lots of trips to China. In recent years I have become interested in global history and how globalization is changing the world. I
believe that our understanding is a combination of what we learn in school and take in through the media, our theoretical understanding of how the world works, and direct experience. I think this course should help people evaluate and connect these three kinds of knowledge.

Professor Carol Hakim

Alan Fujishin

A native of Oregon, Alan attended the College of Idaho where he earned a BA in History, Politics & Economics, and Spanish. This is his third year as a PhD student of History at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the social response to natural disasters in Modern Mexico and issues of historical memory and identity construction.

Melissa Kelley

I grew up in Michigan and moved to Massachusetts to attend Smith College, where I received my BA. I quickly abandoned the East Coast and paralegal-ing to study Modern German and Central European history here at Minnesota, inspired in part by a seven-month stay in the Czech Republic.

David Morton

David Morton, a native of the Washington, D.C. area, is in his third year at Minnesota, at work on his PhD in African history. In a previous career he was a journalist, with long stops in Cleveland, Washington, and Brazil. His last job was as correspondent for the UN's humanitarian news service in Mozambique, the former Portuguese colony where his current research is focused. He earned a B.A. in history from Yale in 1997.
