A qadi is an interpreter of Islamic law, which
is based on the Koran, the sacred book of Islam, and subsequent interpretations
of it by Muslim scholars. The compilers of this legal tradition thought
that it could guide the behavior of Muslims in all situations. Qadis, who
usually could be found in the market squares of Muslim towns, were available
to make rulings in disputes on the basis of their specialized knowledge
of the Koran and Islamic traditions.
