We run a series of professional development activities called "How Things Work." In 2003-04, these included workshops on "Publishing in History Journals," "Dissertation to Book," and "Dissertation Funding."
Future workshops will focus on writing effective grant proposals, and teaching for the first time. The workshops are organized by faculty and graduate student members of the Graduate Studies Committee. Each fall we run a TA workshop for all history TAs. There are also professional development activities organized periodically for history ABDs in connection with placement and instructorships.

The Preparing Future Faculty program with the Center for Teaching and Learning has been popular and invaluable among our students. We urge you to take advantage of these courses and programs.

Congratulations to Nicole Phelps for winning this year's 'Best Dissertation" Award in the Arts and Humanities for her dissertation, "Sovereignty, Citizenship, and the New Liberal Order: US-Habsburg Relations and the Transformation of International Politics, 1880-1924."
Nicole will receive an honorarium of $1,000 and a special certificate. She will also be honored during a luncheon and ceremony at the Campus Club in early June.
May 14th, 2008Tovah Bender (Italy), Aeleah Soine (Germany), and Elizabeth Swedo (Iceland) were awarded Fulbright scholarships to support their dissertation research abroad during this academic year. Congratulations!
