We will meet this quarter every other Wednesday, from noon to 1:00 p.m., on April 14, April 21, May 5, May 19, and June 2. Hoku Aikau (American Studies) will present "'This Toy Kingdom': Isabella Bird's Letters from Hawaii'i" on April 21; and Barbara Welke (History) will present a chapter of her book ms., "Gendered Journeys: Railroads, Injury, and Law in the Making of Modern America, 1865-1920" on April 14th.
We will be wrapping up our focus on women and travel with a two-day
conference, "Gender and the Technologies and
Narratives of Travel," on Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22. The conference
will feature three sessions: Friday 1-4:30 "Women Travelers: Technology
Enhanced Research," Saturday 9:30-12:00 "Women Travelers: Nation and Empire,"
and 1:30-4:00 "Women Travelers: Transforming Gender Relations."
